This will allow the bulb to store the food that the new leaves will need in order to grow. Allow the new leaves to fully develop. These new leaves will usually start to turn yellow in the fall. When this occurs, cut the plant back to about 2" above the bulb. STEP 3: Now is the time to remove the bulb from the soil and clean it. Place the bulb in a cool dark place where the temperature is 40-50 degrees for a minimum of six weeks. You can use your refrigerator to store the bulbs only if you remove all of your apples! Apples sterilize amaryllis bulbs and they will not grow again.STEP 4: After at least six weeks in cold storage, remove the bulbs and plant them in a decorative container. It will take at least seven to ten weeks for the amaryllis to bloom. It will take longer for the plants to produce buds in the winter than in the spring. Caring for amaryllis is a great project for children. All they have to do is water the bulb and watch it grow several inches a day! They are rewarded with spectacular flowers.
