Asterisk is a Private Branch Exchange, also commonly referred to as an open source PBX, and it gives users a unique telephone call management system with an array of unbeatable features. Since the Asterisk software application is free, the cost of utilizing the program surpasses many of the other more costly telephony management systems available today. A number of business owners and organizations that currently rely on different PBX systems are now turning to Asterisk for their individual communication needs.

Why People Rely on Asterisk
Internet telephony services are becoming increasingly attractive to businesses and organizations all over the world. The low usage costs associated with such systems make programs like Asterisk an appealing communication solution for businesses and organizations. Asterisk is a program that can be successfully integrated with current phone systems within a location and often times no special hardware or devices are required so that Asterisk can be utilized. However, people that plan on using Asterisk will need to have accesses to Linux – Asterisk works within the Linux platform. Furthermore, myriad features accompany the installation and use of Asterisk: features that make communication via a telephony system and business management far more efficient than ever before. Business owners and organizations are particularly fond of the idea that Asterisk use can be completely customized to the end user’s exact specifications.

Anyone that wants to rely on the powerful voicemail features, caller id features, conferencing abilities, and interactive voice response attributes delivered up by Asterisk can benefit from the product’s use. Those individuals interested in utilizing the powerful features provided by Asterisk may find that they are required to call upon the services of someone that possesses some IT technological background – the program, while incredibly easy to download and use, may require the expertise of a professional to install and configure properly. In the end, as time passes, more and more business oriented individuals will begin to rely on VoIP technology and programs like Asterisk.

What Can Asterisk Do?
As mentioned earlier, Asterisk is a program with a truly amazing array of functions and capabilities. If a business or organization already currently relies on a proprietary PBX system they may be familiar with the many features that are also offered through Asterisk’s use. End users can use features to improve how calls are managed and handled, and Asterisk offers many common features such as caller identification, automatic call distribution capabilities, voice mail responses, call recording, and much more.

The primary benefits derived from the capabilities found within the Asterisk program are cost related. Hundreds of dollars can be saved on telephony usage when Asterisk is downloaded and utilized. Further, the primary Asterisk program is free to use. Secondary benefits are discovered through the array of features offered through Asterisk. Business management and communications are streamlined into the most effective management plan possible; thereby increasing work productivity.

Asterisk is a program capable of handling VoIP telephone calls as well as standard plain old telephony system calls, otherwise known as POTS calls. Since Asterisk deals with both types of technology, the program serves all businesses and organizations with an equitable solution for every communication need. Asterisk serves as a program that can enhance an existing program by providing additional features at a lower cost to the consumer or it can completely replace existing PBX systems entirely.

Features of Asterisk
The call features that Asterisk delivers to consumers are astounding. Along with some very standard features like call waiting, and caller identification, Asterisk is an open source program that provides special features that other systems do not currently offer. Businesses can rely on call waiting features so that a phone call is never missed, and the consumer can be selective about whom he or she speaks with, thanks to advanced caller identification features offered through Asterisk. In addition, Asterisk has other common features like call forward on busy or on no answer, again insuring that important calls do not get missed by the recipient.

Asterisk PBX is a program that also offers call queuing and parking features, and recording features are available with the program, as well as conference bridging capabilities. Call transfers become possible with Asterisk and business owners and organizations can track calls with far more efficiency thanks to the database integration, storage, and retrieval options delivered up by this powerful communication management program. In addition, other office functions can be managed through the installation and use of a program like Asterisk: the program allows for the receiving and transmission of office faxes, and calls can be routed to the appropriate offices or departments automatically.

The Benefits Derived from the Use of Asterisk
If a business or organization handles many phone calls throughout the course of a standard business day, than Asterisk is an excellent communications solution to choose. In addition to saving money on local and long distance telephone calls, Asterisks is a customizable application offering a business or organization a chance to improve how they manage every incoming and outgoing call from a single location. Messages can be defined and configured by the end user; the user can establish prepaid calling systems or special information lines for incoming callers; calls are routed with incredible efficiency; and records of incoming and outgoing calls serve as an excellent way for businesses and organizations to monitor and regulate all call activities.

Former telephony applications, the predecessors to Asterisk, required that the business or organization purchase, not only the software application, but additional, expensive hardware in order to get the features that are now being offered through the use of Asterisk. With the latter program, such hardware is uncalled for. In fact, if special hardware adapters are called for, the overall cost of such hardware is a whopping ninety percent less in terms of cost than it would be if other programs were installed. Finally, Asterisk is system compatible with Mac OS X and Windows Operating systems. Once installed and configured, if the program is lacking the specific feature desired by a business or organization there are a number of free source codes that can be configured and added by the end user.

Accessing Asterisk
There is no need to purchase a compact disc when a business or organization wants to install Asterisk. The program is available online and can be downloaded with relative ease. There are however, compact disc copies of the program available if the business owner, or organization is willing to pay the 800 dollar fee associated with owning the disc business edition.

In order to use Asterisk PBX, if the business owner or organization is not familiar with computers or with how to configure programs, it will be necessary to hire someone that has such skills. Additional hardware requirements are few and if the user determines that he or she requires additional hardware, it can be purchased from the current sponsors of Asterisk. The user of Asterisk will also need to have access to Linux. If Linux is not on the system currently, the business or organization will have to make sure that it gets installed in order for Asterisk to work properly. Finally, while Asterisk can be installed on a computer with a Windows operating system, the program is large and may prove to slow a computer’s performance some. It is therefore recommended that Asterisk is installed on computers with Mac operating systems.

Asterisk Considerations
In order to benefit from an Asterisk installation, the computer that the application is installed on must meet the minimum requirements established by the designer of the application. In addition, consumers need to realize that since the Asterisk program is an open source and offers inexpensive telephony management options, the program may not deliver superlative consumer support. Minimum support features are offered with Asterisk so the consumer may have to rely on someone else to deal with configuration and troubleshooting issues both during the installation and in the future if problems with the application should arise. While the makers of Asterisk are indeed making a movement toward improving the support that accompanies the program, currently much of the support offered with the program is community oriented only.

Asterisk is constantly undergoing updates and newer versions of the application are often being offered. The program therefore may require continual updates and/or upgrading. The reconfiguration of the program may be necessary when upgrades become available. Again, if the consumer is not an expert in the configuration department, he or she may find that they must rely on someone with advanced computer skills. Alternatively, there has been online documentation made available for consumers interested in learning how to properly install and configure Asterisk. It is estimated that a consumer possessing no knowledge of the application can master the configuration process within a month’s time.

Other Considerations Pertaining to Asterisk Use
Despite the fact that Asterisk is a superlative and unmatched telephony management application, certain issues arise that may cause the program to fail. For example, if the Internet is particularly congested from high volumes of traffic there may be times when end users experience what is term as Internet lag. The program should work better when the Internet is less congested, but there is nothing that can be done at this time to avoid Internet lag events. This means that the transmission of calls may be slowed considerably for a period of time until the Internet returns back to its normal status.

If the user of Asterisk should lose power for any reason, the phone service will not work. Asterisk must have the server and the power working in order for the application to function. If ordinary landline phones are still in use, the lines will continue to work during a power outage, but the Asterisk application will not.

Asterisk Costs
The open source Asterisk application is free to download and install. While the program is free, that does not mean that there are not certain costs that are involved. If the consumer requires additional hardware, then the consumer will ultimately be required to pay for such hardware. The more phone lines a business has, the more hardware one may require. Further, if an IT specialist is hired to configure the Asterisk program, the consumer will be responsible for the additional labor costs.

The latter costs, when compared to the cost savings that are offered by Asterisk mean little in the long run. Asterisk offers the consumer features that are superior to those that are offered with a standard telephone service, regular calling, and long distance calling costs are greatly reduced, and work productivity is increased. The increased work productivity can lower labor costs and increase the quality of customer communications and services. Thus, the use of Asterisk may even augment or improve customer relations and provide a business with a positive business image; a positive viewing by clients and consumers is by far worth the small investment one must invest in order to use Asterisk.
