Be A Green Savvy Consumer

(NC)-Cars, wine, weddings - these days, everything is going green. Grocery stores are no exception with nearly every product boasting a green claim. Though the increase in environmentally-friendly products makes it easier for Canadians to make smart choices, it also makes it difficult for consumers to determine which products are truly eco-friendly.

To find products that are safe for your family and the environment, look for these features on the label:

Biodegradable. Biodegradable materials quickly and safely decompose into products that won't harm the soil, helping to minimize the impact on the environment. When shopping for products such as soap, shampoo and household cleaners, look for bottles made from biodegradable plastic. Green Works, a new line of natural household cleaners from Clorox, is 99% natural and is made with biodegradable cleaning agents. More information on Green Works is available online at www.greenworkscleaners.com.

Sustainable. Reduce your carbon footprint by purchasing products made with sustainable ingredients. Sustainable products are made from renewable resources that grow back quickly and can be cultivated with minimal harm to the environment. These products are created using little energy and can often be recycled after use.

Recycled Material. Do your part to help the environment by recycling products made from glass, plastic and aluminum. At the grocery store, choose products packaged in recycled material. Products with a post-consumer content of 30 per cent recycled material or higher are ideal.

No animal testing. Protect the eco-system by choosing products that do not test on animals.
