Determining the Correct Frame Size for a Bike

There are at least three types of bikes: mountain bike, transport or commuting bike, and touring bike. When you buy a new bike, your main consideration would be its fit. Its frame must fit you properly for maximum comfort when you ride on it. It should not be too big or too small for your size and weight. Even if it is the most expensive bike if it does not fit your size, you will not appreciate it.

To determine the correct size of a bike for you, you first have to know your size. Which part of your body is considered in getting your own measurement? Of course it is your inseam, so measure it when you are barefoot. Place a book between your legs and press it up to your pelvic bone. While standing against a wall, mark the top of the book with a pencil on the wall. Use centimeters.
From the inseam measurement get a rough idea of the size of your road bike. The centimeter height of your inseam is multiplied by 0.65. If your inseam is 86 cm multiply it by 0.65 and it will produce 55.9 cm. This means that the center to top height of the bike is 55.9 cm or 56. But to be comfortable, allow a gap of at least 2.5 cm between your crotch as you stand and the bike's top.
For mountain bikes, the measurement is converted into inches. The same procedure is done by subtracting 10cm from the product after multiplying it by 0.65 and you must know how to convert the measurement to inches. So if your road bike fits 56cm, your mountain bike will be 46cm - or an 18". The top tube length of a bike is considered when sizing.
Women have longer legs but shorter top tubes than men. Most of the time, women get difficulty in buying a bike because of its fit. Manufacturers nowadays have begun making women-specific models. Test ride the bike once you have the idea of what will fit you. You will find out if it is comfortable to ride.
A practical way of determining the correct frame size for a bike is recommended by a cyclist who wanted to be a coach in professional cycling. According to him, there are only three contact points of the human body to be considered. These are pedals, saddles and handle bars. The distance between your groin and the pedals determines the frame size of your bike.
The height of the saddle determines the frame size of your bike if you can position your knee joint when seated on the saddle a little less than 90 degrees to the pedal. This angle varies from one person to the other. The correct size of handle bars depends on a good sizing stem. The length of the stem could be adjusted until you are comfortable with a bend on your elbows. The height should be just below the nose of the saddle when looking at the stem from the front.
