Digital Shredder 4 Premium Introduction
Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium is the key to a really clean computer. Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium includes a number of functions designed to help you protect you and your computer by permanently removing unwanted data, including:
• Leftover traces of your Internet activity.
• Records of your activity in Windows and Microsoft Office applications
• Any other data you want to be really sure is deleted
Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium allows you to remove various types of data from your computer including traces and records of Internet and other activity, downloaded files, or any other data you choose. Data removed by Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium cannot ever be recovered (in most cases).
Dragging files to the Recycle Bin and then emptying the Recycle Bin it is not enough. Merely deleting a file usually does not physically remove data from your hard disk. Software exists (such as Migo Digital Rescue 4 Premium) that can easily retrieve files that you thought were safely deleted, even if you reformat your hard drive. And it is even possible, using exotic equipment, to disassemble a computer and recover
data that was "securely" deleted.
Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium is the next step beyond just deleting your files. It not only removes files but also locates their data on the disk and overwrites it. This is the ultimate in safety, since no one can recover data that no longer exists. Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium offers a number of options, from Quick, which overwrites data one time, to DOD standard (3 times), and even more (up to 200 times are
possible.)
The Shred Center Page
When Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium starts, you should see the Shred Center page. Here you can choose to securely delete files and folders. You may "drag and drop" files to be shredded to the window or choose Browse to browse to files and folders. When you have made all your selections, click the Shred Now button and the files and folders in the list will be permanently deleted according to the settings specified on the Advanced tab of the Settings page.
WARNING: shredded files can never be recovered. If you shred important data, it is gone forever. It is also possible to crash your computer or render it unbootable by removing needed files. Never shred anything if you do not understand what it does.
• When shredding solid state media (such as USB Pen Drives), there is no advantage to using more than one pass (and excessive shredding) may
shorten the life of the device.
• Shredding floppy disks is supported but is an extremely lengthy process. Physical destruction of floppy disks is generally the most practical
method.
• Shredding the contents of an entire drive is supported but is usually not the best way to proceed. Attempting to shred the drive containing
Windows, for example, will certainly fail and may cause your computer to become unbootable. In most cases, it is better to simply do the
following:
1. Delete the files you want to remove.
2. Empty the Recycle Bin.
3. Shred free space on the affected drive.
The System Cleaner Page
The System Cleaner page contains controls for cleaning unwanted information from your computer. To access this page, click the System Cleaner page if it is not. To perform a system cleaning, check items from the list to include (see the System Cleaner page for more information: some cleaning items are not available with all versions of the program) and click Clean System.
You can click Schedule This Job to create a schedule for running System Clean automatically (see The Schedule Cleaning page for more information). You can also click Save This Job to save your selection of items to include in the cleaning. You may also specify the job to be loaded by default by clicking Save Default from the Save This Job window.
Most of this page is filled by the list of data to be removed. It is organized as a Windows Explorer-style tree. Checking the box for an item marks it for cleaning; you can also check the box for a top-level folder (Windows, Internet, Microsoft Office) to quickly check or uncheck every item in it.
Clean System Controls
a) Clean System performs a cleaning, removing all checked items. Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium will display its progress in the Status
column, then display whether the cleaning succeeded, failed, or requires the computer to be rebooted to complete. The approximate number of
files/registry entries and their size are also displayed following a cleaning. If Files/Entries is 0 and the
cleaning succeeded, it usually means that nothing needed to be cleaned.
b) Save this job: allows saving the job to be loaded at a later time. Specify a name for the job and click Save or Save Default to save the
job. Save default will make this the default job displayed next time the System Cleaner page is opened.
c) Schedule this job: displays the Schedule Cleaning tab so that a cleaning job can be scheduled.
Cleaning Options List
The following items are built into the program. Installed plugins may add other items as well.
a) Find History – A record of any Find operations you have performed on your computer
b) Recycle Bin – Securely deletes (shreds) the contents of the Recycle Bin. This can take a ling time if there are many files to shred. WARNING:
Restore Points of third party utilities that modify the behavior of the Recycle Bin can cause this feature to fail, by “hiding” files where
the Shedder cannot find them
c) Run History: List of all files opened using the Start Menu / Run command.
d) Temporary Files: assorted temporary files created or downloaded by Windows programs. Most installation programs create temporary files.
e) Clipboard: The Windows Clipboard, which you use for Cut, Copy, and Paste
f) Common Dialog History: A history of any common dialogs that you have used
g) Recent Documents: Clears out My Recent Documents list under Windows Start section
h) Address bar: The list of visited sites found under the address bar
i) Autocomplete (not available on Digital Shredder U3 Edition): Data that allows a web browser to complete typing for you.
j) Internet Cache: Web Browsers generally download files one time and store them locally in case they need to be used again. Your internet cache
may contain images, sound files, etc, from the last several days of browsing, even if you close your web browsing
k) Cookies: Small files stored on your computer by websites you visit.
l) History: The list of visited web sites
The Cookie Whitelist
The White List contains a list of web browser cookies. A cookie is a small file created when you visit a website: some are legitimate and useful, but many are not (spyware cookies are used to track you on the Internet and can provide a list of all web sites you have visited). Cookies can be removed as part of the System Cleaning function on software version that provide this feature. Microsoft Internet Explorer support is built in; other browsers require plugins and not all are supported.
The problem with cleaning ALL cookies from your system is that useful information may be lost. For example, if you use online banking or shopping services, deleting cookies will cause them to "forget" your name, account number, etc., forcing you to reenter the data every time you visit them. To help with this problem, Migo Digital Shredder 4 Premium has the ability to "white list" web sites so that their cookies are
not removed. You can choose to allow all cookies from a site (domain), or only specific ones.
The Schedule Page
The Schedule Cleaning page is accessed from the System Cleaner tab by clicking Schedule This Job. It allows you to establish a schedule for System Cleaning to occur automatically. A schedule does not require the application to be running: it will be started automatically if necessary. Select a radio button to cause a cleaning operation (using the current settings) to occur at a given interval, starting from the current day and time.
Specific Patterns Page
This page allows you to search your computer for files that may contain credit card and social security numbers, passwords, and other sensitive information. The search will look through both existing files on your system as well as deleted files that may be recoverable with data recovery software such as Migo Digital Rescue Premium.
Simply enter information you wish to search by selecting the correct input section, followed by inputting the data into the fields as needed. Add as many items that you wish to search into the pattern list. Once complete, select the Scan button to begin the search. A list of found items will be returned giving you’re the option to shred any returned sensitive information.
