From film and television production to jewelry design, Jeanne Johngren has an art for capturing an audience. After a 12-year career in film and television production, Johngren felt she needed to put her creativity into something else. "I tried out a number of things until I fell in love with jewelry making. I actually wanted to start my own company. I did not want jewelry design as just a hobby but as something substantial. Something I could turn to as a creative outlet," says Johngren. In 2002, Jeanne Johngren Design, New York, was established.
Color plays a large role in her work. "I have always been inspired by color. I wanted to design pieces that worked off of colors and created a balanced object," says Johngren. Unusual shades of green and blue tourmaline, sapphires, and diamonds are set in white, rose, and yellow 18k gold. "The combination of the hard metal with an array of colors brings softness to a piece," she says.
"As a designer I would rather go outside the industry and receive my ideas from architecture. I want to bring symbols of culture's past and present into my collections," explains Johngren.
In her most recent collection, "Orlana," the inspiration came from stained glass windows and Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps. "When designing this collection, I wanted to focus on the colors and play with the patterns. I found stained glass windows to be mystical works of art," says Johngren. The retail price points of the collection range from $500 to $7,500.
Johngren is planning to launch a new black-plated sterling silver line with accents of gold. "I plan to start with a mini collection to see how it is received. From there I will expand the line and work in precious stones. I wanted to create a collection of affordable elegance."
