What Is A Sales Representative?
A sales representative is the person who is responsible for selling something. They might work for a large company, one or more individuals, or a small business. They might be in charge of selling goods or selling services. No matter what they’re selling, the way that they deal with the buyers will remain the most important part of the job for a sales representative.

The purpose of sales is the completion of a commercial activity. Therefore, any business that either sells products or services will need some type of sales representative to complete these transactions. In smaller businesses, the sales representative might hold other jobs, as well. However, in larger businesses, there is usually a separate department dedicated to sales. Therefore, if you are going to be a sales representative, you should be aware of the fact that there are many positions open for sales representatives in lots of different companies. A sales rep might end up working in a store, on a telephone, or in their car.

Skills Needed For Sales Representatives
There are several main skills that you must have as a sales representative. First, you must have the ability to learn about products and services and understand them fully without relying on other information. This is a part of your job that requires you to be constantly retaining a lot of information, and be able to tell people about it. This is because a sales representative should be someone who can answer all the questions about the products or services, without needing to look for the information. A sales representative is someone who can do this easily, so knowing all the answers and understanding all the facts involved with the products or services are both very good skills to have.

Another skill that you need as a sales representative is the ability to be good with numbers, or to be able to compute things quickly. Both these things are important in a sales representative career. This is because you will be spending lots of time talking about your products or services, and telling people what kind of good deal they will be able to find with your business or company. Therefore, good number skills are vital.

A sales representative must be able to talk to people and show them that the product or service they are selling is the best one for them to buy. In order to do this, they must be good at telling people what they want to hear, but doing it truthfully, so they are not being dishonest. Convincing people they need something they do not is often a difficult skill to master, but it is a crucial one for a sales representative.

Perhaps the most important skill that a sales representative must have is skill in dealing with people. Dealing with people is difficult because a sales representative must be able to read a potential buyer. They must understand when they should push forward with more information, and when they should back off and let the buyer make their own decision. A sales rep needs to be able to look at a person and simply understand what kind of purchaser they will be. Then, they need to be able to change their sales technique on a moment's notice in order to fit each individual buyer.

Direct Sales Representatives
The first type of sales representative is a direct sales representative. A person who is this type of sales representative works directly with the product and the people who are buying it. They might be found in a retail establishment, such as a clothing store or grocery store. They also might be found in a business, where they will be accessible to the customers that come to the business. A direct sales representative works with the people and the products. They are the ones that actually hand over the merchandise and take the cash from the buyer for that merchandise. This is a direct sales representative.

Telephone Sales Representatives
Another type of sales representative is one that works on the telephone. These are often called telemarketers. Their job is to sell products to people while on the phone. There are two categories of telephone sales representatives. There are phone representatives that answer incoming calls and make sales, and those that initiate the calls to make the sales.

The telephone sales representatives that answer the calls are usually located within the business. They will be responsible for answering the line that people call in on when they would like to purchase a product or service from the company. They must also be knowledgeable about what the company is selling, and must be able to be a people-person over the phone. They also must be able to convince people who call in that they do indeed need to buy the product or service. Hopefully, they will be able to convince these people on the phone that they need to purchase more of the product or service than they originally thought.

The telephone sales representative that actually makes the calls has a slightly more difficult job to do. This is because they are cold calling, meaning that they are calling people who have not called them to ask for a product or service. It also means that many sales representatives may go an entire day without making a sale. In order to be this type of sales representative, a person must be very patient and good at convincing people they need something, when these people might not have even thought that they did.

Door-To-Door Sales Representatives
Another type of sales representative is one that works on a door-to-door basis. With a door-to-door sales representative, the job consists of taking materials, such as books or clothing, or services, such as insurance, and actually taking them to people's homes and businesses to sell them. As a sales representative, a person might get to do a lot of traveling. However, they might find themselves frustrated, because they are often turned away from places where people are not interested in what they are selling.

Often, a door-to-door sales representative works for a company. They are sent out with either the products that they are selling, or with information and order forms for the products or services that they are selling. A company might have an idea of where they should go, or lists of places to visit. Sometimes, a door-to-door sales representative will not have a list or an idea of where they should go; they will have to do it all on their own. Whether they have a set route or not, the door-to-door sales representative must be able to work without very much supervision. This is an important skill for a door-to-door sales representative.

Agents And Sales Representatives
A sales representative can also be an agent of sale. These people represent either side of the sales process. For instance, a sales representative can be a sales broker. This person represents a person or company that is on the selling end of a deal. If a sales representative is a buyer broker, they represent the person or company who is making the purchase.

A sales representative can also be a disclosed dual agent. This is a sales representative who represents both sides of the sale or purchase. The job of a sales representative who is in this position is to mediate between the seller and the buyer during and after a transaction.

A sales representative who is a transaction broker doesn't represent either party. This person represents only the transaction. This is a sales representative who is responsible for making sure that the transaction goes off in the right way, without any problems.

The Relationship Between Sales Representatives And Marketing
There is an important relationship to explore between sales representatives and marketing. Marketing is something that plays an important role in sales, and the sales representative should be able to understand this. In fact, in small businesses, the sales representatives might even be responsible for the marketing.

Marketing is, in essence, making the product or service that a person or company is offering look good enough to actually buy. When someone is in charge of marketing, their job is to make sure that clients and customers will be interested in buying the products. Therefore, the job of marketing representatives is to get ideas out there in advance, so the products will sell when the sales representatives send them out.

However, it is important to know that marketing and sales representatives go hand in hand. Without good marketing ideas, sales cannot be made. And without sales, marketing would be pointless. This is why some smaller companies have their sales and marketing people as the same people. This is a good way to make sure that the process is followed from start to finish.

Training For Sales Representatives
The training for a sales representative will vary, depending on where they are working, and what type of sales they are doing. However, most of the time, there are a few main training components that are important.

The first part of training includes becoming familiar with the products or services that they are selling. This means that if they are selling items like encyclopedias they need to understand the encyclopedias, what information is contained in them, how many volumes there are, and all other pertinent information. If they are selling services such as insurance, they must have a good idea of what the policies cost, what each policy covers, and how long the policies will last. Learning about the products or services that they are selling takes up the majority of the training period for a sales representative.

The next part of sales representative training is making sure that the person actually knows how to make a sale. If they are telephone sales representatives, they will be trained on the phone and with the various scripts that they need to use in order to make sales. If they are door-to-door sales representatives, they will be trained on what to say to people when they answer the door, and how to convince a person that they need something. If they are direct sales representatives, and they work in a store, they will be trained on the products, how to make a sale, and on the various things they need to know in order to do their work in the store. This might include running a cash register, doing inventory, or many other things.

Salary For Sales Representatives
A salary for a sales representative is not something that is going to be set in stone. In fact, depending on what a person is selling, where they are selling the items, and how they are selling the items, the salary for a sales representative can vary dramatically.

Many times, a sales representative will work on commission. What this mean is that a person is earning a percentage of the money that they are bringing in. If a sales representative is very good at making sales, they will be able to work very closely with their customers, and will be able to make a lot of money working for commission. If a sales representative does not work on commission, they might earn money through salaries. Also, some sales representatives will work on an hourly wage. In a few situations, sales representatives will get a base salary or an hourly rate, but will also be able to earn a commission on the items or services they have sold.
