Toaster
There are three main types of toasters, but there is a very wide variety of styles and brands. Toasters can vary in terms of price, too, and this site will tell you everything you need to know about toasters, including where to buy, so that you can choose the right one.
Toaster - Types
Electric toasters may conveniently be divided into three classes as:
1. Manual The toasting period is left to the judgment of the operator. In most cases, it is necessary to turn the handle to reverse the toast
2. Semi-automatic Other toasters of this classification include a thermostatic switch, in which the toasting period is thermostatically controlled by the surface temperature of the bread
3. Automatic Are classified as the "pop-up" type and include, in addition to the heating element, a thermostatic switch or timing device which automatically controls the toasting process.
Toaster Features
Some toaster have Electronic touchpads others Less-convenient models have a shade dial with no numbers or unlabeled symbols. Toasters slots are less than 5 inches deep; others are about 5 1/2 inches.
Recent toaster-oven innovations include various ways to speed up the cooking process, including use of a convection fan or infrared heat. More and more models incorporate a control that automatically defrosts and toasts in a single step.
With toaster ovens, a nonstick or porcelain interior makes cleaning easier. Fancy features: A cancel button which allows you to stop the toasting process midway. A reheat button which warms previously toasted bread without making it darker. Defrost Bagels Toasters Easy cleaning
How do Toasters Work
A toaster uses infrared radiation to heat a piece of bread. The toaster coils produce infrared radiation. The radiation gently dries and chars the surface of the bread.
Infrared radiation is created by using nichrome wire. Nichrome wire is an alloy of nickel and chromium. It has two features that make it a good producer of heat:
Nichrome wire has a fairly high electrical resistance compared to something like copper wire, so even a short length of it has enough resistance to get quite hot.
The nichrome alloy does not oxidize when heated. Iron wire would rust very quickly at the temperatures seen in a toaster. Toasters have two mica sheets wrapped in nichrome wire, and they would be spaced to form a slot about an inch (2.5 cm) wide. The nichrome wires would connect directly to a plug.
Window of the Past
In Roman times toasting bread began as a method to make life of bread longer.
Crompton and Co (UK) invented the first electric toaster 1893 and then re-invented in 1909 in the United States. In 1919 Charles Strite invented the modern timer because the previous models were turn off manually.
More recent additions to toaster technology include the ability to toast frozen bread, automatic toast lowering with no lever to push, a mode to toast the cut side of a bagel only, separate operation levers to allow users to toast either two or four slices, and reheating functions which allow toast to be warmed without being burned.
Basics
A toaster is an electric kitchen appliance for toasting bread, especially by exposure to electrically heated wire coils. A toaster oven is used to the same or as an oven.
How to Choose the right Toaster & Toaster Oven
Toasters
If you want mainly to toast bread, bagels, and English muffins, a toaster is the right choice.
Consider the features: Find a toaster with the features that suit your needs. Decide how many slots you need in the toaster, depending on how much bread you will toast at the same time. Toasters generally have from 2 to 4 slots. Consider space and capacity. Consider safety: Toasters that have a plastic housing are less likely to retain heat and feel hot to fingers than those made of metal.
Toaster ovens
To toast and cook, pick a toaster oven.
Consider the features: If you'll be cooking burgers, be sure the toaster oven can broil. If speed is of the essence, consider a toaster oven that uses convection cooking, which speeds roasting and baking, or infrared heating, which speeds toasting. Consider counter space and capacity: Some toaster ovens are slightly bigger than others. The smallest we tested is about 16x8x11 inches; the biggest, about 20x10x15.
Best Toasters Guide
Cuisinart TOB-175BC Best large toaster oven. The feature-laden Cuisinart has a heating sensor, broil function, electronic controls, a digital display and removable crumb tray. It has a non-stick interior for easier cleanup.
T-Fal Avanté Elite Best mid-sized toaster ovenThe T-Fal is smaller than the Cuisinart, measuring about 16 x 11-inches, yet it still has a roomy enough interior for six small pieces (or four large pieces) of toast.
Sanyo Space Saving Toasty Oven SK-7 Compact toaster ovenWith about a 10 x 10-inch footprint, the compact Sanyo does the basics well, including toasting bread, heating frozen pizza and warming leftovers, but it's not meant for much more than that. There's no broil function, no thermostat and just a 15-minute timer.
Care & Usage Notes
Unplug your toaster and allow the appliance to cool completely before cleaning it.
Remove the crumb tray from the bottomover the sink ,brush the crumbs into the sink then clean it with water and rise. If the tray can’t be removed, shake the cool, unplugged toaster upside down over the sink or trash can.
Glass cleaner on a cloth is the best to clean a chrome toaster,
Don’t use abrasive pads or cleanser on the outside of a toaster, they will scratch permanently.
Soak a paper towel in all-purpose cleaner and place it over baked-on spots, if your toaster has, for several minutes. The cleaner will help dissolve the stain over time.
How to Fix a Toaster
Pull out the plug. Turn it over and remove the screws in the bottom, using a screwdriver (see A). On a toaster with a metal body and plastic end caps, just remove the screws that connect the bottom to the front end cap. On a toaster with a full plastic body, remove the screws that hold the entire cabinet body in place.
Pull the knob off the carriage lever. This is the part that lowers the toast into the toaster. Remove the front end cap or the cabinet body as needed to get to the electric contacts. Locate the electric contacts. They'll be below and in line with the carriage lever. Inspect the contacts. If they are burnt or pitted, clean them with fine sandpaper, then move to step 7. If one set of contacts is melted together or appears to be seriously damaged, replace the toaster.
Depress the toast carriage lever and check to see if the two sets of contacts touch firmly. If they don't, you'll have to adjust them, as in step 8. Use needle-nose pliers to grab the movable contacts. Slightly bend them up and away from the fixed contacts. That way, when you depress the carriage lever, it will apply more pressure to the movable contacts and press them firmly against the fixed contacts Reassemble the toaster and test it.
