White Goods - Basics
White goods are large electrical home appliances (refrigerators or washing machines etc.) that are typically finished in white enamel.
Household appliances are essentially divided into the following types
Small electrical appliances, e.g.: microwave ovens, coffee- and tea-makers, kettles, toasters, hand mixers, deep fryers, electric knives, vacuum cleaners, hair-dryers, electric razors, irons etc.
Large electrical appliances, e.g.: dishwashers, cooking stoves, washing machines, refrigerators and freezers, clothes dryers
Air-conditioning appliances, e.g.: heaters, fans, humidifiers
Overview
White Goods are large electrical home appliances that are typically finished in white enamel. White goods make cooking, cleaning and other home tasks easier. Major appliances are divided in Brown and White goods.
White goods comprise major household electrical appliances including Refrigerator Stove, Vacuum Cleaners, Air Conditioner, Washing Machine, Dryer, Dishwashers, Stoves, and more. Microwaves are considered white goods but they contain complex electronic boards that white-good servicemen don’t want to repair because they are not trained to do so.
Energy saving tips for white goods appliances
all your appliances clean and in good working order, so they will work more efficiently and effectively.
Fully loaded appliances are more efficient, but overloading can result in poor appliance performance.
Use the smallest appliance available for the task. For example, using a toaster oven or microwave to cook small amounts of food that you would ordinarily cook on a range uses less energy.
When replacing old white goods make sure you check the EU Energy Label as it will tell you how efficient the product is. Any appliance with an A rating or A++ will save you more money in the long term as well as helping to reduce CO2 emissions.
Energy Rating Scheme
The Energy Rating Scheme is a mandatory national labeling scheme for:
Refrigerators Freezers Clothes washers Clothes dryers Dishwashers Air conditioners
Look for the Energy Rating Label that shows the star rating and other useful information about energy consumption. Choose an appliance with a high star rating. Add the purchase cost and the lifetime running cost to get a more accurate picture of the total cost of an appliance.
What is Savaplug, often mentioned in Refrigerator’s energy saving?
SavaWatt is a company that aims in today's world to promote the sensible use of electricity, and to help eliminate unnecessary and costly waste.
SavaWatt is a world leader in saving electricity costs and limiting the emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses into the environment through the use of its energy efficient products in refrigeration, air conditioning and air handling equipment.
SavaWatt was established in 1985 and produces a range of fixed speed motor energy loss controllers known as SavaControls and the famous SavaPlug.
Savaplug replaces the usual plug at the back of the fridge and will cut energy use from the appliance by 20%.
What are Chlorofluorocarbons?
Large appliances (white goods) require special disposal methods because some of them contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are also known as Freon.
Freon represents several different CFCs, which are a group of aliphatic organic compounds containing the elements carbon and fluorine, and, in many cases, other halogens (especially chlorine) and hydrogen. Freons are colorless, odorless, nonflammable, noncorrosive gases or liquids. During the 1990s, the US Congress passed a law banning the use of CFCs in new products and more environmentally friendly hydrofluorocarbons were developed for use as refrigerants.
Federal law mandates that refrigerants be recovered and recycled. Appliances that contain refrigerants include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, water coolers and dehumidifiers. Regardless of where you or your waste hauler takes your appliance, the law stipulates that the refrigerants must be recovered before the unit is disposed because CFCs released into the atmosphere can deplete the ozone.
Proper recycle/disposal of large appliances
Large appliances (white goods) require special disposal methods because some of them contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are also known as Freon.
White goods are generally collected and/or stored by the county or municipality for recycling or disposal. Contact the solid waste department in your county or municipality to find out what recycling/disposal services they provide for refrigerators, freezers, washer/dryers, and air conditioners. Some communities collect appliances at the curb after making special arrangements with the homeowner, while some require residents to bring them to specific site(s) in the community. Some appliances can be taken to a scrap metal recycler in the community where they will be recycled. Call the scrap metal recycler in the area for more information on their requirements.
Cleaning Tips
Here are a few tips to keep your white goods looking good, on the inside.
1. If the inside of your dishwasher is starting to look dull or stained, run the machine "empty" through a short wash cycle using two cups of white vinegar, after the initial "pump-out". This should be repeated every six months or so.
2. Vinegar is also handy to clean out your washing machine. About twice a year, run the washing machine on a short wash cycle with four liters of white vinegar; this will remove any build-up of soap or detergent scum in the machine.
3. To clean off baked-on food in your microwave oven with a minimum of effort, squeeze a half cup of lemon juice into a bowl and pop it in on high for two to three minutes. As the juice boils, it fills the oven with steam and the citric acid in the lemon vapor works like a mild bleach and cleaning agent. This loosens the grime, which can be taken off with a damp cloth.
